The Counselor Experience from the Camp Directors
Being a camp counselor is one of the most rewarding experiences and at the same time one of the most difficult. It can be most rewarding because of the impact on the life of a child. The impact may come in many different forms, from teaching a new skill in an activity to helping someone make new friends. Often just spending time with a child and listening is the most important thing for that child. As a counselor, you help children with their social skills, which are often overlooked in this technology driven time. Being a counselor is difficult because of the time commitment. It is a 24/7 type of job for the length of the camp season. Time off is involved but you are always wondering if your campers are doing well in your absence.
Winona is very fortunate to have a long history of outstanding staff, many of whom are long time campers before returning as staff. The Winona Experience is one that is well balanced between the developmental needs of the campers, overall fun and a positive, rewarding experience for the staff.
The Winona Staff works as one big team, separated into units and departments. From the kitchen staff to the unit staff to the main office, every staff member is an integral part of the success of Winona. Together, the experience provided (campers and staff) is one that lasts a lifetime!
